Biography

Daphne Maxwell Reid was born and raised on Manhattan's west side. 

After graduating from Bronx High School of Science she received a scholarship and went on to Northwestern University.  In her sophomore year, Daphne was named Homecoming Queen becoming the first black women to do so.  Here she achieved a degree in interior design and architecture. During that time she started modeling and did a Seventeen magazine photo spread before signing with the Eileen Ford modeling agency.

In 1979 she moved to Los Angeles to establish an acting career.  She worked with her husband making his directorial debut in 'When We Were Colored' as a second unit director and assisted him with production.  


While in her sophomore year at Northwestern, Ms. Reid was named Homecoming Queen. She was the first black woman to win that title at the university. Her beauty and elegance were also recognized by the Ford Modeling Agency, and in 1969 she gained the distinction of being the first black woman to appear on the cover of Glamour Magazine. In addition to modeling, she also got involved in commercials and industrial films, and worked as a radio disc jockey.

She married to actor Tim Reid, who stars in the television series Sister, Sister, in 1982.  She helps him produce movies and she produces television shows as well. They have three children together who have all graduated from college.  With her husband, Daphne has a 72-acre ranch in Virginia which is their home when they are not in Los Angeles. 

She enjoys planting, canning and growing vegetables and photography.  She has raisied scholarship money for students at Norfolk State University in Virginia, and worked on behalf of an anti-drug media-based group.
